  • Spring planting is upon us here at Sherrill Family Farms.  Even with the cool weather this April we are hoping to be able to get some seed in the ground with in a week if the weather allows.  Spring is the season of new beginnings and as such Jordan and Erica have added to the farm family with an Australian Shepard puppy named Indy.  Indy livens things up around the farm as well as slows down productivity.  Along with playing with Indy, Kevin and Jordan have been busy treating soybean seed and delivering seed orders to get all of the Channel customers ready for spring planting.  All of us here in the Sherrill Family wish everyone a safe and speedy planting season!

  • The first half of 2017 has been a busy one around Sherrill Family Farms.  Most of the winter was spent hauling grain and doing maintenance.  We did not get a lot of cold and snow this winter which allowed us to get a few more projects done.  Spring work started off warm and dry in April and then turned cold and wet in the beginning of May which slowed up planting but luckily it dried off fairly quickly and allowing us to get planting done in a timely manner.  June has brought more dry weather with some warm and some cool days allowing us to get some spraying and nitrogen on the corn.  All of us here at Sherrill Family Farms wish you a fun and safe summer!

  • 2016 harvest on Sherrill Family Farms ended two weeks ago and it was one of the more challenging harvests we have had in a few years.  The fall started off a little on the wet side which caused us to decide to purchase a set of tracks for the combine.  The tracks allow us to leave the fields in better shape for next years planting by lowering the impact that the combine has on the soil in adverse conditions as well as in ideal conditions.  This is the same reason we rented a Quadtrac® for pulling the grain cart at the end of corn harvest.  The yields we saw from our Channel Seed® this fall were great again this year and if you are interested in seeing the data from our corn and soybean plots please see the links below. Despite challenges, we are fortunate to have another successful harvest and we wish that everyone else had a good harvest as well!

  • Summer has ended and transitioned into Fall which means that harvest is right around the corner on the Sherrill Farms.  All of the equipment is ready to go whenever the crops are ready which will probably be soybeans this week.  We have had a busy summer around the farm taking care of the corn and soybeans as well as cutting wheat, tiling and some tree work.  With harvest starting for farmers in the area we wish everyone a safe and productive harvest!

  • We at Sherrill Family Farms have had a great second half of 2017!  Harvest was finished up right before Thanksgiving and we were very thankful to have a bountiful harvest as well as a safe harvest for all of us involved.  From June til now we have been busy working on a few projects, from finishing up our Freightliner dump truck, rebuilding the engine on our John Deere 4440 and doing some conservation work on a rented farm by building waterways to help prevent erosion.
  • The 2017 harvest was one of two extremes.  Harvest started with cutting soybeans in the end of September and it started off as one of the driest starts to a harvest in recent memory.  The dry conditions made soybean harvest start fast but it was also challenging harvesting the low moisture beans without losses.  As soybean harvest was proceeding the second weekend of October we received 5.5 inches of rain which the ground absorbed very well.  That following week we were able to finish soybean harvest and begin corn harvest.  With the beginning of corn harvest came more rain and yet more rain causing fields to go from extremely dry to extremely wet in a matter of days.  Corn harvest was very challenging with wet fields and good yields.  Due to the wet conditions we decided to rent a QuadTrac to pull graincart to speed harvest along.  Even with the wet conditions we were able to get some fall tillage done the end of November and beginning of December helping make for an easier start to Planting 2018!  After a great year at Sherrill Family Farms we all wish that everyone has a great holiday season as well as a great 2018!

  • After a slow start to spring planting with the cold weather in the beginning of May we were able to start planting on the 19th.  Once we started planting it sure went fast because we were able to finish up on the 29th of May, which is about as fast as planting can go for the conditions we were given.  Now that all the crops are in the ground we are hoping for some rain to help get things growing.  Nitrogen application to corn will be beginning this week which will keep us busy for a couple of weeks. Flag Day weekend in Three Oaks is happening next weekend and we wish everyone a safe and exciting weekend!
